Clarrie takes his last bow To invoke that favourite journalistic cliche Clarence Fernando, the dean of Sri Lanka's press corp was cremated in the presence of a large and distinguished gathering. Although a Catholic Clarrie as he was widely known, had asked for a cremation and he was borne on the shoulders of the prefects of St. Benedict's College, Kotahena which was his alma mater. There was a palpable sense of loss as the old newspaper people gathered to bid good bye to one of their most famous sons. The man who was recruited by E.C.B. Wijeysinghe in the time of the Lake House founder, D.R. Wijewardene was going away closing an era in Sri Lanka's journalism. And those who gathered for clarrie's farewell bore testimony both to his stature in the press as well as the affection he commanded among his colleagues. A tribute to Clarence Fernando, one time news editor of the 'Observer' and an editor of the 'Daily News' will appear in next week's edition. |
