'Thala Sara' to felicitate D. R. Pieris

"Thala Sara" a felicitation ceremony will be held for one of the greatest drummers of the country on February 22 at 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm at the John de Silva Memorial Hall. D. R. Pieris is a renowned artiste and his reputation as the foremost tabla player commands the highest respect in Sri Lanka.

He is being felicitated in appreciation of the dedicated service to local music. He began his musical career in 1952 under tablist A. C. Sirimanne and musician W. J. Fernando. He received an intensive training in music from Lucknow Bhathkande University. He came first and passed with distinction at his Visharadha exam.

He directed music in "Diyamanthi", "Palagatiyo", "Kanchana", stage dramas - "Padmawathie", "Ramayanaya" and Gammane Mal Pipila".

Eminent artistes Pandith Amaradeva, Sangeeth Nipun Sanath Nandasiri, Victor Ratnayake, Visharadha Nanda Malini, Visharadha Edward Jayakody, Visharadha Chandrika Siriwardena, W. D. Ariyasingha and Yamuna Vinodani and the students of D. R. Pieris will present the creations of D. R. Pieris.

"Thala Sara" is presented by the D.R. Pieris foundation.

Familian Walk

The Familian Walk to celebrate Centenary year of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya take off from the school grounds after an open air mass at 7 a.m. on February 21.

The route will be Galle Road, Buller's Road, Duplication Road, Dickman's Road, Galle Road and back to school.

Appeal

Mrs. H. A. Dotty Nona of Sapugahawatte, Dodangoda in Kalutara South aged 56 is suffering from acute renal failure. Doctor Chula Herat has recommended kidney transplant to be performed in India which will cost around Rs. 800,000.

At present a sum of Rs. 2500 has to be spent for every three days for her renal dialysis undertaken at Sri Jayewardenapura Hospital.

Any kind hearted person willing to donate an A Positive or O Positive kidney to save her precious life is requested to contact Telephone Nos. 034-81867, 034-29860 or 077-323167.

Walter Perera dies

Walter Alfred Perera of No. 80, Sri Sobitha Mawatha, Wadduwa passed away at the age of 80.

He was an English teacher at the Kalutara Gnanodaya College. A social worker in the area, late Mr. Perera was also the Kalutara Correspondent for the then Times group.

His funeral will take place at the General Cemetery, Wadduwa today, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m.

A special loan scheme for lawyers

Recently the Chief Justice handed over letters of offer to the value of nearly Rs. five million to 12 successful applicants and the members and Associate Life Members of the Colombo Magistrate's Court Lawyers' Association. Hatton National Bank processed the applications of the lawyers seeking to obtain loans designed to help them.

Mr. Hemantha Warnakulasuriya, President of the Colombo Magistrate's Court Lawyers Association recalling the difficulty he had to undergo as a junior lawyer when he applied for a loan from a leading state bank. He further said that the lending institutions have not changed their methods even after 30 years. Though technology has progressed banking laws in Sri Lanka have made little progress. At that time the documentations required by the Bank was so overbearing that several times the officer-in-charge of the loan found fault with his application and the application was returned. The scheme would bind the Lawyer and the Association with the Bank.

Journalist Zainul Hussain dies 

Veteran journalist M.C. Zainul Hussain passed away yesterday morning after a brief illness. Hussain, who was a senior journalist serving in The Island newspaper, was taken ill while on his way to take a flight to Mecca on Haj pilgrimage. 

The funeral took place yesterday evening at the Jumma Mosuqe burial grounds, Dehiwela. Late Hussain began his career in 1952 with the Thinakaran newspaper of the Lake House Group which he served until 1982 ending as chief sub editor. He then joined the Daily Mirror and later The Island.
