SOLO-U bids to release LTTE detainees

Business tycoon turned peace crusader Deshamanya Lalith Kothalawala will consult a team of lawyers attached to his organisation - SOLOU (Society of Love and Understanding) to review the cases of 400 LTTE suspects at the Kalutara remand.

Mr. Kothalawala said that he was able to release two detainees who had been languishing in jail on minor charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act for their inability to furnish cash bail.

It is hoped that at least ten detainees could be released from the Kalutara remand and the SOLOU would endeavour to free those who had been held on suspicion without any connection whatsoever with LTTE terrorist activities.

Asked whether he would request the LTTE for a prisoner exchange,Mr.Kothalawala said that it was not his mandate but he would support any such move by the government, clergy or any other organisation to urge the LTTE to release the rest of prisoners of war (which the Tigers claim to be seven).

According to Lalith Kothalawala, his organisation will also look into human rights violations based on the war milieu.
