Peterites to break the drought?

by Pelham Juriansz

St. Peter's College, Colombo who are currently lying fourth in the school table behind Lumbini, St. Sebastians and Kalutara MV go out favourites to win the 68th "Battle of the Saints" to be held at the P.Sara stadium on March 1 and 2.

St. Joseph's, their rivals in this annual encounter have not had such a successful season and therefore go in as underdogs in this vital "big" match.

St.Joseph's skipper will be Thivanka de S. Wijeratne and the Peterites will be led by Jehan Jayasuriya.

Rev.Fr Felician Perera, the Rector of St.Peters speaking at the Press conference at the Galadari Hotel was very concerned that the match be played in a good spirit.

The playing hours for the match have been increased and on the first day a minimum of 105 overs will have to be bowled. On the second day a minimum of 110 overs will have to be bowled(light permitting) which includes the 20 mandatory overs in the last hour.

The Rector of St. Joseph's(who are the hosts this year) mentioned that they hope that the 24 year old drought which has resulted in so many draws will be broken this year and a result will be achieved. If this new format of playing time doesn't work there is a distinct possibility that the match will be extended to a three day affair from next year.

The Peterites have a very strong batting line up with vice captain Denver Faux, P. Jansz, skipper Jehan Jayasuriya, wicket keeper batsman Gihan de Silva and R. Fernando all capable of good scores. They also possess a capable bowling side having bowled out the Royalists for a mere 91 last week. Having won two of their 12 matches so far they have one more game to be played with De Mazenod College, Kandana. With no less than 4 coloursmen they possess a good experienced outfit.

The Josephians on the other hand are not having the best of seasons with their batting having collapsed against the Royalists. It was left to number 9 Joel Sabreen (who has been one of their main strike bowlers) to come up with a scintillating performance with the bat a safe the game for them.

They have played 10 games with one win against Prince of Wales and one loss against St.Sebastians.

Centurion, skipper and only coloursman Thivanka de S. Wijeratne and C. Aravinda have bone the brunt of the Josephian batting this season.

Positive cricket will be the order of the day and both sides are hoping for a result according to the organisers.

The main sponsors will be Dialog GSM and the radio updates will be given by ABC radio with Sun FM.

Ceylon Cold stores will provide the drinks for the teams and also the spectators with ticket prices being slashed drastically to help bring in the spectators.

So, the Saints will go marching in on March 1 and 2 at the P.Sara stadium.
