An Appreciation - Kavan Rambukwelle

I first met Kavan and his wife Anne many year ago when the Duncan White Sports Foundation was in the early stages of being set up. Since the Duncan White Sports Foundation was founded on a new concept - one in which objectivity and consensus were its guiding principles, it required a president whose reputation was beyond reproach to rear the organization into existence. Kavan was the person who fit these requirements perfectly.

A widely respected and eminent sports personality, who had a glowing reputation in rugby, he embodied the ideal qualities we associate with sportsmanship. Kavan was brought up in an era where winning was not the sole purpose of the game, where team spirit and fairness were the primary underlying principles in sports, Kavan was a paragon of these values which have become so rare today in the world of sports, where the scramble for money, fame and glory have taken precedence over decency.

Kavan had rare qualities and I grew to respect and admire him. He was humanist and a true team player. The sports arena in Sri Lanka is still largely male dominated and Old Boy networks are still strong. However, in spite of this, Kavan was open-minded enough to encourage and support me as President of the Foundation. This particularly impressed me, because he grew up during a different era when gender equality was not a generally accepted value.

Particularly in the last few years during which I have served as the President of the Foundation, Kavan had always lent me wise counsel and was always ready to lend his assistance. Through the years, Kavan's continued service as a Trustee to the Foundation contributed much to sustaining the high standards upon which the Foundation was established. I find it hard to imagine the Foundation without Kavan. His camaraderie and good advice will be sorely missed by me and my fellow Board members. Our next gathering will be a very sad one indeed!

Jennifer Moragoda,

President, Duncan White Sports Foundation.
