Graveney stands firm over Gough omission

LONDON, Feb 16 (AFP) - England chairman of selectors David Graveney said Friday that fast bowler Darren Gough will not be selected for the forthcoming Test series against New Zealand unless the attack is hit by a injury crisis.

Graveney was responding to speculation in the British press that Gough, who took four wickets in 11 balls during the first one-day international against New Zealand on Wednesday, would be recalled to the Test team.

Yorkshire quick Gough, 31, voluntarily opted out of the three Test tour of India that preceded England's visit to New Zealand.

At the time he made his decision the selectors insisted that players could not pick and choose which tours they wanted to go on.

Gough was omitted from the New Zealand Test series despite making it clear that he was available for that leg of England's winter programme.

And Graveney told BBC Radio 5 Live Friday that the selectors were not about to change their minds.

"The players were offered a contract that encompassed two Test series in India and New Zealand," Graveney said.

"Darren decided he wanted a rest and that's up to him. Therefore the squads were chosen without him playing Test match cricket.

"He is an important guy but we have to stick to decisions that we have made. There could be extreme circumstances with injuries or whatever - situations could change.

"But at the present stage I am happy to let (England coach) Duncan (Fletcher) and (captain) Nasser (Hussain) get on with the cricket.

"Our situation hasn't changed, whatever speculation there has been."
