SMS facility from Suntel wOw

By Chitra Weerasinghe

A Short Message Service (SMS) facility from Suntel wOw that enables Dialog, Celltel and Mobitel mobile phone users to send and receive brief messages promptly via their phones was launched last week in Colombo.

"We have signed up with Dialog, Celltel and Mobitel, the top three mobile phone operators in this country and thus our www.wOw.lk portal users could now send short messages through these networks. Besides, for the first time in Sri Lanka's Internet history, these mobile phone users could also reply through wOw SMS," said Sriyan Wijeratne, Suntel's Director Sales and Marketing.

Wijeratne said they considered this service a major breakthrough facilitating interactivity between two different forms of communication - the Internet and mobile phone.

Suntel Managing Director Hugo Cederschoild said his company was keen on meeting new challenges and had, therefore, been looking for innovative techniques for changing the way people in this country used the Internet for their business affairs, gaining information and or performing various transactions. This SMS facility was the answer.

Describing Suntel wOw as a mix of business and pleasure, he said a registered portal user could with his/her colleagues and friends perhaps enjoy the joke of the day, exchange short amusing anecdotes or even send a love note in addition to business matters.

"We have proved our capacity for developing new features and we want to balance what is useful to our customers and what would at the same time enhance the quality of life," said Cederschoild.

Besides the three mobile phone operators, the company had also collaborated with WaveNET (OmniBIS).

Cederschoild said OmnbiBIS, a software company which focuses on developing new wireless applications as well as enhancing existing ones, had also played an important role in providing Suntel wOw with the `OmniBIS Mobile Office' - the interface between wOw SMS and the mobile operators.

Right now a registered portal user (registration is free) can send up to 15 messages per day. There are 900 SMS users and 2,500 general portal users, Wijeratne pointed out.

This SMS facility affords many options. Users could create their own personal contact list which means easier and faster usage. WOw Classified, wOw Cards, wOw Weather, wOw E-Mail, wOw Cricket and wOw Scheduler are some of the other features introduced by Suntel.

The wOw Scheduler helps to maintain appointments and get notified via E-mail of appointments.

Suntel wOw was launched in May 2001. In October last year, Suntel wOw launched a self-learning guide to the Internet called 'Get intimate with the Internet' targeted at beginners to the Internet.
