SLIM Awards: Golden night for Lintas

by Elmo Leonard

LDB Lintas carried away the highest number of medals (32) at Sri Lanka's most glamorous advertising event - the annual SLIM Awards - held recently.

Grant McCann took more golds (eight), compared with Lintas' six golds, but ended the year's event with a tally of 22 medals.

This year, the medal count was led by Lintas and Grant in first and second places respectively, followed by Phoenix Advertising in the third place. It won six golds, to be on par with Lintas. There was a record 925 entries this year.

Lintas carried away 13 silvers, five more than Grant could muster, and seven more than Phoenix. Thirteen was again a lucky number for Lintas in the bronze category, while Grant and Phoenix won six and four bronzes respectively.

Leo Burnett was placed fourth with 10 medals; three gold, five silver and two bronze while J. Walter Thompson took a single gold, two silver and five bronze awards.

Masters DDB, though failing to secure a gold, finished sixth in the medal tally, with seven; four silver and three bronze.

Bates walked away with two gold and three silver medals while Ogilvy Outreach won two gold, two silver and a bronze. Minds FCB received a single gold and a silver medal. Advantage, Q&E and Thompson won one bronze medal each.

When the 13th SLIM Awards, organised by the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) to determine excellence in the advertising industry was concluded, Lintas had made it to the top for the second year in succession. Last year saw Lintas, a relatively new entrant to the local advertising sector, take 28 medals, leading in all three, gold, silver and bronze tallies, over Grant.

Lintas is led Lilamani Dias Benson, who is also President of Four As.

There were many rejects among the entries, and a number of categories went without awards on the grounds that they did not merit gold, silver or bronze awards.

SLIM Awards 2002 was held in association with the Four As. The promoters of the event were Dulux, Coca-Cola, Swedish Trading, VFX Headquarters, Graphitec, Trans Asia Hotel, SriLankan Airlines, Business Today, Sign Tech and Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre. The media sponsors were Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd., ETV, Sun FM and Gold FM.
