150 schools now part of YESL

Young Entrepreneur Sri Lanka (YESL) recently launched the School Programme - 2002 at D. S. Senanayake College, Colombo 07. V. K. Nanayakkara, Secretary, Ministry of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs was the chief guest at the event where 800 students from over 150 schools participated.

YESL adopting the Junior Achievement International Programme is a project to inspire young children to value free enterprise and to train them in the skills of owning, operating and working in a business. Starting with nine schools and 1,600 students in 1998, the programme has grown to reach 150 schools covering 15,000 students. YESL teaches business to all levels from age five to 22 with the help of a sequential curriculum, learning material and activity methods.

Students in the elementary level enjoy role-playing and building up cities, mock companies, producing and selling items, taking decisions on price, quality and the mode of production.

At middle level, they write their own bio-datas and resumes, create jobs in their businesses and recruit the correct candidates by holding the interviews themselves. They do enterprises in action and learn how the economy could be managed effectively. At the senior level, students from companies, build up business plans, appoint director boards, operate current accounts in banks and operate the business to earn a profit. They learn the social responsibility of business and to create jobs. More than 6,000 students have traded in shares, and gained profits from their businesses.

Although Colombo district has the largest number of schools out of the 150, the programme is now spreading to places like Mahiyangana, Deniyaya and Ratnapura. All programmes are sponsored by business organisations so that every child can reach it free. Two national awards events are also held to recognise the achievements of the students. At the launch, the participating schools exhibited their products and materials, demonstrated their ways of learning and made presentations about their achievements.

Certificates were also presented to 325 primary students completing one programme. Two companies of D. S. Senanayake College and several others from all parts of the country were launched on this day.
