Risen splendour

The prolonged drought in the Maskeliya area has dried up most parts of the Mousakelle Reservoir. This is the real face of the power crisis and the resulting power cuts.

The drying up of the waters of the Mousakelle reservoir resulted in the reappearance of the old town of Maskeliya.

Some of the buildings had vanished with the impounding of the waters but today especially the places of worship could be still seen as they have withstood the ravages of the waters for over 34 years.

Maskeli Oya Hydro Electric Scheme was commissioned on May 3, 1968 by the then UNP Government with the late C.P. de Silva as Minister in charge of Land, Irrigation and Power. Here are some pictures of the old buildings which have re-appeared and is drawing large crowds, mostly pilgrim to Sri Pada, as the season is now in progress.

The old bridge from the road to Hatton is still going strong and the people claim this bridge to be over 140 years, as old as the plantations in the area itself.

The Muthu Mariamma temple in old Maskeliya town is still intact. Some devotees have decorated the temple with streamers and have garlanded the statue inside. They now worship here again.
