US Assistant Secretary of State: LTTE must prove it’s not terrorist group by ANANTH PALAKIDNAR The United States Assistant Secretary for South Asian Affairs, Christina Rocca, urged the LTTE to dedicate itself to the peace process and to prove that it was not a terrorist organisation. She said that the LTTE should respect the democratic process and the human rights if it wants to be removed from the list of "terrorist organisations" of the US government. Ms. Rocca was speaking at a press conference held at the Galle Face Hotel yesterday. Speaking on her visit to Jaffna soon after her arrival in Colombo, Rocca said: "My visit to Jaffna indicates the support given by the US government to the peace process in Sri Lanka. The progress in the peace process shows that the LTTE is showing its interest in the negotiations and we hope that it will grab this opportunity to prove that it is not a terrorist organisation," she said. Asked about US Marine General Tim Ghormley accompanying her to Jaffna, she said that it was a coincidence and that the US-Sri Lanka military co-operation had strengthened over the past several years, essentially in training. She said that since the President's schedule had been full, she had held talks instead with Presidential Advisor Lakshman Kadirgamar. |
