Pakistan clash with Sri Lanka in first game today

Sri Lanka national football team will take on Pakistan in the opening match of the Pakistan team's 11-day tour today at the Sugathadasa Stadium under lights 7.00 p.m.

On a special invitation extended by Manilal Fernando, the vice-president Asian Football Confederation, the Pakistan Football Federation have readily agreed to play five matches, four against the national team and a game with the under-20 national team.

On March 19, Sri Lanka meet Pakistan in Kurunegala, March 21 against under-20 national team in Kandy. March 23 with Sri Lanka at the Sugathadasa Stadium. The Pakistan team is expected to be in Jaffna on March 25 at Duraiyappa Stadium.

The Pakistan team consists of 24 players and 6 officials. The team has been in training for the SAF Games and the SAARC tournament to be played in Pakistan and Bangladesh. But both tourneys were postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.

The visiting team has included several under-23 players who played in the World Cup Asian qualifying round matches.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka team led by Dudley Steinwall have been in the 'pool' practicing for several weeks after completing the Premier League championships. All players are in peak form and should give a good account against the visitors.

Marcus Ferreira, the Brazilian Technical Advisor/Coach along with Anthony Balendra, M. Faiz and Lalith Weerasinghe (national coaches) have been handling the Sri Lanka squad.
