Records are good, but consistency in performing well is better - Sanath Jayasuriya

by SRIAN OBEYESEKERE

Sri Lanka is two wins away from equalling Australia's record of 11 wins on the trot, but skipper, Sanath Jayasuriya was not much concerned about it.

"You can have it (record) in mind, but my main concern is to just try to perform well and keep it going. What the team and I look to is not to be overawed by records. We just try to play our normal game which is the basis to maintaining a winning balance", stressed Jayasuriya in an interview with the 'Sunday Observer'.

Fresh from leading his country to the Asian Test Championship title (Sri Lanka won by 8 wickets against Pakistan last week), Jayasuriya said that this victory outside Sri Lanka was a morale-booster for the tours of South Africa and Australia after the Sharjah one-day triangular.

"To win in Pakistan is very good in getting into fettle for the tours of South Africa and Australia this year", said the Lankan captain, adding that apart from some star performers what was important was that the team was clicking in all three departments - batting, bowling and fielding.

He said that what was heartening was that `the team has been dong well.' "It is nice that we have won our last 9 Test matches, and it is nice to see that our performance has improved", added Jayasuriya.

Commenting on the immediate tour at hand when Sri Lanka travel to Sharjah in April for the Sharjah Cup involving Pakistan and New Zealand, Jayasuriya said that he was having his fingers crossed that key pace bowler, Dilhara Fernando would be fit.

"We are hopeful he will be cleared by Alex. He is back in training and I'm confident he will make it to Sharjah. We have missed his services badly", he noted.

Fernando, the right arm pacie, who broke into the Sri Lanka team over an year ago, became an instant hit in sharing the new ball with Chaminda Vaas. But Fernando missed out from the home series against Zimbabwe and the Asian Test Championship versus Pakistan due to an injury.

Jayasuriya was optimistic Sri Lanka could win the Sharjah Cup from Pakistan to whom his team lost in the final last year.
