Nigerian Islamic court orders flogging, jail, for child rapist

LAGOS, March 16 (AFP) - An Islamic court in northern Nigeria has ordered the flogging and jailing of a man found guilty of raping an eight-year-old girl, radio reports said Saturday.

The Islamic court in Jigawa State ordered the man, whose name was not given, to be given 100 strokes of the cane and spend a year in jail, Rhythm FM radio said.

The man, who was found guilty Friday, was also ordered to pay 10,000 naira (90 dollars) in compensation to the girl.

Twelve states in northern Nigeria practice versions of Islamic law.
