Overseas fishing firms for joint ventures here by Elmo Leonard Sri Lanka's new conservative government has invited overseas fishing companies to enter into collaboration ventures with the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation (CFC), which comes under the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources. These companies could export tuna caught outside the island's EEZ, through the Colombo airport. CFC would assist in the processing, packing and freight of tuna, to markets in Japan, Europe and the United States, spokesmen for the fisheries ministry and CFC said. The foreign collaborator would be required to make its entry through the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BoI), the nation's one stop shop for foreign investment. BoI companies are subject to a range of concessions. The foreign collaborators would be expected to bring in its fishing boats and employ Sri Lankan crew. Sri Lanka lies on the great migratory paths of tuna. Other species of fish caught outside Sri Lanka's EEZ, would be purchased by the CFC, in a bid to increase domestic consumption. The foreign collaborator would also be allowed to bring in technology to upgrade local fishing craft. |
