Galway Miridiya - the tourist paradise in the Cultural Triangle

The Galway Miridiya Lodge started in 1968 as the Miridiya Hotel, the first tourist hotel in Anuradhapura.

Overlooking the beautiful Nuwarawewa Tank and the world famous Mihintale Rock, Galway Miridiya Lodge is certainly a tourist paradise in the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka, in an atmosphere of homely ambience.

Miridiya was originally built as twin houses. In 1968 with the incentives offered for tourism, it was converted to a hotel by connecting the passage between the houses and building a restaurant in front and kitchen behind. This was followed by building a new 10-room block and a 22-room hotel was opened in 1970. In 1973 another 8 rooms were added with the assistance of TUI and in 1975 the hotel was expanded to a 39-room hotel with a large restaurant and public area.

Galway Hotel Management Services, Rajagiriya became the owners of Galway Miridiya Lodge since May, 2000. Since this company bought over the hotel, a massive refurbishment has been done and hotel has been up-graded to a star class hotel with all modern facilities.

All rooms at Galway Miridiya were re-designed and refurbished recently. The land stretching up to 2 acres on which the hotel stands, has been beautifully landscaped to blend with the Nuwarawewa Tank reservation which overlooks the hotel.

Galway Miridiya now offers 39 air conditioned rooms with all modern facilities. The hotel has a large and beautiful pool. From the main restaurant guests can get a panoramic view of the blue waters of the Nuwarawewa Tank and Mihintale Rock. The main hall at the hotel could accommodate over 200 guests and therefore it has become a popular venue for weddings, seminars and company picnics.

The 'theme nights' and the daily Sri Lanka lunch buffet which includes a variety of delicious western cuisine prepared by veteran chef Jerald Mario Jayatilleke and his team of cooks, have become very popular amongst tourists and Sri Lankans visiting Anuradhapura.

Over 92 species of birds have been identified in the hotel compound and the hotel has become a popular venue for bird watching. 'We are promoting eco-tourism in a big way, Resident Manager, veteran hotelier, Mano de Silva said.

The latest addition to Galway Miridiya will be 24 self-catering exclusive suite chalets with a jungle atmosphere. These chalets are to be built, overlooking the gorgeous Nuwarawewa Tank, de Silva explained. The new adventure program of the Galway Hotel Management Services will include white-water rafting, jungle trekking, mountain-biking, sky gliding, parachute jumping, and jungle safaris.

Another latest attraction is the Sunday lunch buffet offering guests a wide selection of both Western and Eastern cuisine with swimming pool facilities. Galway Miridiya Lodge, Anuradhapura and Galway Forest Lodge, Nuwara Eliya are owned and managed by Galway Hotel Management Services, Rajagiriya.
