CWC to make its presence felt in Colombo District ? by P. Krishnasamy The Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC) will hold a further round of talks with the UNP tomorrow, Monday, on finalising allotment of key positions to its nominees in certain local government bodies in the Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts. The talks will also be centred on 'replacements' with CWC candidates, against UNP slots, in terms of an understanding between the UNP and CWC leaderships on February 8, after the controversy over interpolation in nomination lists. The CWC, a key constituent of the UNF, contested the election on UNP ticket and 38 of its candidates were returned. It anticipates a further 14 seats in terms of the understanding with the UNP. Talks held on the matter last Wednesday and Friday, were attended by UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrama, General Secretary Senarath Kapokutuwa and CWC MP for Colombo District R. Yogarajan and CWC Financial Secretary and Deputy Minister Muthu Sivalingam. Sivalingam told the Sunday Observer that they had requested for chairmanships in the Nuwara Eliya Pradeshiya Sabha and the Hatton-Dickoya Urban Council and Deputy Chairmanships in the PSs of Kundasale, Kotmale, Walapane, Haputale, Haldumulla, Passara and Kolonnawa. The plantation people had voted en-block to the UNF anticipating restoration of peace in the country and the bestowment of the just rights of the minorities, he said. The CWC played a major role towards the historic victory of the UNF in the election, he further said. If need be, they would meet Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe, after tomorrow's talks, he stated. |
