16 local bodies cleared by courts

The Court of Appeal has given its ruling on sixteen of the twenty cases filed over discrepancies in the nomination papers being rejected for the local government polls. Four petitions, that of the Peliyagoda Urban Council, Galle Municipal Council, Ambagamuwa Pradeshiya Sabhava and Nattandiya Pradeshiya Sabhava, are still pending ,the Deputy Commissioner of (Elections), M.C. Arunthavachelvam told the Sunday Observer.

The Commissioner of Elections in concurrence with the Returning Officers will decide on a date for polls on these bodies after the court ruling on the other four local authorities.

The 16 bodies already cleared by the courts are -Mihintale Pradeshiya Sabhava, Tirappene Pradeshiya Sabhava, Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabhava, Tangalle Urban Council, Katunayake-Seeduwa Urban Council, Ratnapura Municipal Council, Nindaavur Pradeshiya Sabhava, Thirukkkovil Pradeshiya Sabhava, Kesbewa Pradeshiya Sabhava, Kalutara Pradeshiya Sabhava, Hali-Ela Pradeshiya Sabhava, Panadura Urban Council, Moneragala Pradeshiya Sabhava, Buttala Pradeshiya Sabhava, Ratnapura Pradeshiya Sabhava and the Colombo Municipal Council.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Elections has appealed to the Supreme Court against the decision of the Court of Appeal in respect of the Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabhava and the case will be heard on May 28.
