Sri Lanka vs. Maldives on April 4 and 6 by Leslie Fernando Maldives soccer team will arrive in Sri Lanka on April 3 at the invitation of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka to play two matches against Sri Lanka. Maldives will be on their way to Singapore to play in the invitation tournament to be staged from April 10. Sri Lanka who put up a splendid performance against Pakistan few days back will be up against the formidable Maldivian team which is one of the strongest soccer playing nation in the South Asian region. Sri Lanka last played against Maldives in May 2000 at the Maldivian Golden Jubilee Invitation Soccer Tournament at the Male. Sri Lanka beat Maldives 6-5 in a penalty shoot out after the regulation time of 90 minutes and also after 30 extra minutes play had the scores one-all. Sri Lanka beat Maldives after a lapse of II long years. The present Sri Lanka goalkeeper M. Naushad was the hero at the finals. Naushad with great anticipation and superior goal-keeping helped the Lankans a great deal to stop the Maldivians in scoring. Sri Lanka earlier beat the Maldivians only in 1989 March 31 at the same venue. Late Neville Abeygunawardena was the coach of the Sri Lanka team. Sampath Perera was the captain of the Sri Lanka side. The first match against the Maldives will be on April 4 and the second match on April 6 at the Sugathadasa Stadium under lights. Sri Lanka will field the same side that played against Pakistan. With a better display by Sri Lanka, the Lankans drew the first two games in Colombo and Kurunegala against Pakistan and won the third and fourth games I-0, 2-1 played in Colombo and Kalutara. |
