Colt's ride high - take 1st innings points from SSC by LAL GUNASEKERA SSC who have conceeded first innings points to Colts already are yet 99 runs behind with six wickets in hand in their second turn at the end of the second day of their four-day Premier Division I Super League Cricket Tournament final at the SSC Grounds, Maitland Place yesterday. SSC made 216 in their first innings with Colts replying with 411. SSC in their second turn were 96 for 4 when bad light stopped play with 24.4 overs yet remaining. Sri Lanka's top batsman Mahela Jayawardena who is in roaring form for SSC at the moment (double century versus Tamil Union last week and 137 in the first innings on Friday) was yet at the wicket on 32, stroking two boundaries and hitting a huge six. Together with Jayawardena is another Sri Lanka Test Cricketer, Thilan Samaraweera who is unbeaten on 23 with four fours. They have added 58 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket. Two other Sri Lanka Test Cricketers, Marvan Atapattu and Avishka Gunawardene failed to make any sort of impression with the former falling to Dulip Liyanage and the latter to Chaminda Vaas. Liyanage finished with 2 for 25 and Vaas 2 for 22. Colts who were 183 for 3 overnight added 228 runs yesterday and were all out about 15 minutes before the tea break. Romesh Kaluwitharana added only 22 runs to his overnight 50. He thumped 14 boundaries in his 73 ball knock of 72. Jeevantha Kulatunga too batted well to make 50 off 70 balls with seven fours but the main highlight of yesterday's play was the 81 made by Muthumudaliage Pushpakumara. He faced only 97 deliveries and slammed 10 boundaries and a six. These two batsmen (Kulatunga and Pushpakumara) made 79 runs for the seventh wicket. Pushpakumara was involved in another fine 59-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Eric Upashantha who made 27 while the leading wicket takers for SSC were the two pacies - Nuwan Zoysa (4 for 43 in 18 overs) and Ruchira Perera (3 for 124 in 20 overs) with right-arm spinner Thilan Samaraweera chipping in with 2 for 87.
