Women peace-makers gather in Colombo

Women activists from some of the world's war zones and women academics studying the effects of conflict on women and their strategies for peace will gather in Colombo early next month for a consultation on 'Women, peace-building and constitution-making'. The conference, organised by the International Centre for Ethnic Studies (ICES), will be held from May 2 to 5.

Up to fifty international participants and more than 100 Sri Lankan participants and expected to attend, an ICES spokeswoman said. With the peace process now revived in Sri Lanka, the organisers are hoping that the conference would help Sri Lankan women active in the peace process in various ways from Government to academic to non-governmental organisation sectors.

The conference will study the needs of women in war situations, and develop strategies to help women involved in peace-making and constitution-making.
