by Deepal Warnakulasuriya

The Consular Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has promised additional facilities for Sri Lankan migrant workers with immediate effect. These include prompt attention to workers' complaints acceleration of certification procedure.

The new Director General of the Consular Affairs Division, Gamini Kariyawasam said the complaints relating to payment of compensation, fishing boats and shipping matters, registration of births, marriages and deaths will be given special action. He also said that appropriate action will be taken to repatriate Sri Lankan detainees in various countries.

Most of the complaints relate non-payment of salaries, under payment of salary, harassment, ill-treatment; denial of basic facilities and inability to work.

The former Director General U.L.M. Zawahir said most of the complaints made by the housemaids and other workers are misunderstandings due to cultural differences.
