Sri Lanka third in SAARC Golf

by LAL GUNESEKERA

Sri Lanka were third at the South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC) Golf Team Championship at New Delhi, India with India beating Bangladesh in the final. Nepal were fourth, followed by Bhutan, while Pakistan did not compete.

According to the President of the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU), Shiran de Soysa, Sri Lanka failed to make much impression as Jehan de Saram developed tendon problems in his wrist and did not continue playing mid-way from the second-round. Amrith de Soysa's putting had let him down, while Lalith Kumara had done well, but not enough to get Sri Lanka into the final.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, are to field only a two-member team for the Pakistan Amateur Championship to be staged in Islamabad from April 18 to 21. They are Anura Rohana and Lalith Kumara.

De Soysa said: "The SLGU were to send a four-member team, but the cost is enormous as the team has to travel via Dubai as there are no direct flights from Colombo to Islamabad.

He also said that the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship has been advanced to the first week of September as the original dates clashed with the ICC Trophy cricket tournament too being scheduled to be staged in Sri Lanka at this period. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal will be sending their top amateurs to play in Colombo, while the SLGU are trying to encourage players from South Africa, Malaysia and Dubai too to compete in Colombo.
