Quickshaws - tours with a tradition

by Beverley Jansz

Founded in 1950 as a taxi (a quicker rickshaw) company, Quickshaws rapidly moved into operating tours around Sri Lanka (then Ceylon). Its brand of individualised tour production was based on the owner's extensive knowledge of the country, the high quality of their chauffeurs, combined with a focus on individual and special interest travellers. Accommodation was in the two or three colonial hotels in Colombo, Kandy and Galle or traditional resthouses.

Quickshaws operates its own fleet available for self drive as well as with chauffeurs. The chauffeurs are English speaking, experienced, knowledgeable about the country, its history and culture, flora, fauna and safe.

They have worked with the company for many years. The fleet ranges from small station wagons and saloons to deluxe Mercedes, with vans and mini coaches and four wheel drives available on request. The Operations Division ensures that they are mechanically sound and well maintained.

Quickshaws continues to handle clients from many countries, not only English speaking from the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, East Africa, and India but also Switzerland, Germany, Italian, France, Spain, Russia and the Emirates to name a few. Many are return clients or referred to us by previous clients.

Quickshaws has experience handling incentive groups and conferences, even ship excursions (for the world famous Lindblad Explorer amongst others). It has handled brochure programs for KLM Australia, Viajes Catai Spain, Tour Bureau Moscow, Andrew Brock Travels (UK).

For cricket tours, biology student or other special tours, we draw on a wide range of resource people. Quickshaws Limited operates two of the most popular resthouses (country inns) on the island.Tissawewa Resthouse and Nuwarawewa Resthouse. Resthouses were originally set up to house administrators travelling on the sovereign's duties during Colonial times.

As with country inns in Europe, they were located in administrative towns and at convenient intervals for a change of horses. Unlike the dhak bungalows in India, the facilities available have been comfortable, if simple. With the advance of tourism both local and foreign, these facilities have been up-graded and improved to the extent of providing air-conditioning and swimming pools. Tissawewa and Nuwarawewa Resthouses at Anuradhapura have been managed by Quickshaws since April 1, 1967. Miss Niramala de Mel heads Quickshaws Ltd, as Managing Director.
