A new director right on top with Ruwan Sakmana

The film industry and tele-dramas will flourish or perish to the extent the directors show competence in selecting stories that are relevant and appealing to the cinema or to the tele-drama audience. Producers will not hesitate to invest money in films and tele-dramas if they are convinced that they were investing in a profitable venture.

Watching some of the Sinhala movies and tele-dramas in the recent past, one cannot be happy with the performances of film/tele drama directors. It is no doubt that directing a film is not an easy task. It needs both theoretical and practical experience to be a very good director. But we regret to note that the quality of work is low and hence one has to look for good directors to have good films and good tele-dramas.

True, Sri Lanka does not have a proper institution to train quality directors. But it is also true that the mere fact of having an institution to train alone is not going to help. It is an on-the-job training, that matters most. If one receives training while on the job, that will make one qualify and be an assert to the industry one belongs to. You can be a producer if you have the money and the means but you cannot be a good director unless you have an in depth-training while on the job.

It is in this backdrop we found an upcoming and promising young man who has put his hand in directing "Ruwan Sakmana", a new tele-drama after long years of service and on the job training. He is Ranjith Rubasinghe and " Ruwan Sakmana" is his premiere. He had learn the job under the guidance of Dr. Lester James Peiris and Mrs. Sumithra Peiris and several others, prior to venturing into directing his maiden work. The new tele-drama will come on Swaravahini at 9.30 pm on every Wednesday.

Attention on Rubasinghe was drawn while he was playing a role as a Three-Wheeler driver in "Murganganavi", directed by Kumarasiri Abeykoon. But he had played insignificant roles in a number of tele-dramas by this time. "Sathutu Kandulu", directed by Jayamini Wimaladharma paved the way for him to enter the tele-drama and the film industry and he is grateful for that first opportunity which has changed his life.

Rubasinghe who plays the main role in this tele-drama, hails from Maramba-Akuressa and is the son of D.P. Rubasinghe, a professional artistes who had a name for being a part and parcel of stage drama of his time. After studying for GCE Advanced Level at Rahula Vidyalaya, Matara, he came to Colombo in search of his future. He gave up the security job he was doing at the CWE Head Office and joined the OCIC cinema course conducted by Andrew Jayamanne at Paul VI Centre in Fort, Colombo.

Rubasinghe while appreciating the help and the assistance he has received from everyone who had been generous enough to train him in his chosen field says that he is very much conscious of what the audience expects from a film or tele drama director.

"Ruwan Sakmana" produced by Renuka Udawatte and the script is written by K. B. Herath. Nimathi Porage, Deepani Silva, Janak Premalal and several others play in this story which deals with the perennial problem involving man, money. They come to the ultimate realisation that they are part and parcel of a sinful world and invites the audience to look for one's own self for once, to realise the truth of the message the story tries to put across.
