Charity horseback ride to Jaffna on May 11

Christine Anderson and Nihara Jayatilleke Rutnam, the two intrepid women who are planning 'Peace for Children', a charity horseback ride to Jaffna on May 11, will commence their journey with a preliminary ride through Colombo on May 5.

The Colombo ride, scheduled to begin at 5.00 pm from the Independence Square and wend its way through to the Galle Face Green, seeks to secure public participation for the project through contributions and donations. "We invite everyone to come and join us to support the underprivileged children affected by the conflicts in the northern regions," said the two riders.

Christine and Nihara, who earlier visited the Vanni region to identify the needs of the women and children, have adopted the Children's Ward at the Vavuniya Hospital, an IDP camp in Poonthottam, Vavuniya and a number of schools in Manukulam, Velanai, and Delft in Jaffna as part of their 'Peace for Children' project.

"Our intention is to collect goods that are specific to children's needs and distribute them to particular projects," said the two riders, who have compiled a list of items as being urgently required by the hospital, camp and schools. These include boilers, kettles, plastic cups, chairs, buckets, bed linen and other essentials for the hospital; shoes, uniforms, toys and stationery items for the Vavuniya IDP camp and a wide range of clothing and educational itmes including desks and chairs for the schools.

On the Colombo ride, the two women will be collecting children's clothing (used or new), shoes (used or new), stationery items, sporting equipment, note books, food items including tea, biscuits, sugar and milk powder and other items that will be of use to children.

Goods for each project will be packed ready for distribution prior to the ride and will be taken to the Vanni region by road and to Jaffna by air. 'Peace for Children' is being assisted by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, the GTZ, and supported by the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in the North and East.
