Paada Yaatra pilgrimage during Vesak by Umangi de Mel Devotees, both young and old, will walk some 350 miles on the annual Paada Yaatra pilgrimage from Jaffna to Kataragama which begins during Vesak this year. The pilgrims will begin their 45-day walk from the Selvachchanithi Murugan Kovil in Thondamannaru, in the Jaffna peninsula. The event will be facilitated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The chief guest at the launching ceremony will be Mr. Tyronne Fernando, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. "This is an event that can re-build our image as a multi-relegious country since Muslims, Tamils, Christians and Buddhists are expected to join the pilgrimage from the east coast", Manik Sandrasagara, a pioneer of the Yaatra said. This is organized by the Kataragama Devotees' Trust and the Cultural Survival organisation. Saj Mendis, the assistant director, publicity, said that the ministry would extend its full co-operation and assistance to the Paada Yaatra and it was an attempt by the new Government to restore peace and reconciliation among all communities in the country. |
