Le Kandyan and Culture Club sponsor bowling tournament

by PELHAM JURIANSZ

The inaugural Millennium Bowling Club Tournament at Darley Road is on and many interesting matches have been witnessed.

The tournament is sponsored by Le Kandyan Hotel, Heerasagala, Kandy and Culture Club, Dambulla. As a prelude to the club tourney, the Y2K bowling alley is conducting men's and women's singles events. The finals will be on April 30 at Darley Road.

Meanwhile, archery will also be a competitive sport at Millennium Park.

Ms. Dharshini Varma of the Millennium Park Development, said that she has many plans to develop the park and include archery along with a movie theatre. Dharshini, has enough experience, having worked at Emirates and AirLanka, said that the anniversary of the park was held last month and it has become very popular.

Meanwhile, Robie and Jun, the Filipinos, who have won many bowling tournaments here, were quite keen that the game be improved here. In the Philippines they have as many as 36 lanes and the two Filipinos feel that the sport will catch-up here.

The bowling alley has a number of TV screens that record the scores of the games as they take place. The competitors have to wear special shoes to play on the surface . The game itself is simple with the ball which is held by three fingers swiftly thrown down the lane which is very smooth and what is needed is to knock down as many skittles as possible. When one strikes down all the skittles it is called a "strike" and 10 points are scored.

A player can use as many balls as he/she wants and the points are calculated on the number of points scored as a result of the skittles knocked down.

Bowling is catching on in Sri Lanka and even cricketing stars like Arjuna Ranatunga and Aravinda de Silva are seen at the alley.
