A record number of 283 entries (197 boys and 86 girls) have entered for the Robbialac Junior Masters Tennis Championship which got under way yesterday (Saturday) at the Queen's Club and Health Department courts. The finals will be on April 28. This is being sponsored by Lankem Ceylon Limited for the second consecutive year.

The tournament director and chief organiser, Sudantha Soysa, speaking at a media briefing on Thursday night said that this was a Grade 'C' ranking tournament and all top juniors, excluding Franklyn Emmanuel and N.S. Nishendran will compete. He thanked Lankem for the sponsorship.

He further said that the age groups are under-10, 10 to 12, 12 to 14, 14 to 16 and 16 to 18 years and all events will be singles, and in the inaugural year (1997), the tournament attracted only 170 entries and have now grown in popularity.

The General Manager (Paints) of Lankem, Tony Ranasinghe, said that Lankem were satisfied with the manner Sudantha Soysa has been conducting this competition and that they will continue with their sponsorship in the future too. He said: "The young players are being groomed in a tournament of this nature and this was one of the key reasons why we decided to sponsor such a tournament.

Among the others who were associated with the briefing were Parakrama Hettiaratchi (National Sales Manager, Robbialac), Romesh Fernando (Secretary of Gymkhana Club) and Ms. Nadine Fernando (Holmes Pollard). L.G.
