Celebrating 50 years of Lanka, Japan relations

A number of organisations in Sri Lanka are gearing up to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Japan with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Tokyo.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating the programme and Foreign Affairs Minister Tyronee Fernando will be in Japan for the occasion.

Most of the events are to take place between end-September and mid-October. First in the series of events for this year was the participation of nine Sri Lankan exporters at 'International Jewellery Tokyo' in January, organised by the Export Development Board (EDB).

This will be followed by a special jewellery show 'Colours of Lanka' in October which is also organised by the EDB. Around 150-200 pieces of jewellery made for the Japanese market by 30 top Sri Lankan designers will be displayed. The jewellery show is sponsored by the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO). Japanese and Western models will display these jewellery at a fashion show in Tokyo in October. The clothes of these models will be designed by Yolanda Abeyweera, an EDB news release said.

The National Gem and Jewellery Authority will display two special gemstones of Sri Lanka at the same venue.

EDB will also organise a single country export product display in collaboration with JETRO and the Department of Commerce. Twenty five to 30 companies will be selected to participate at the fair, displaying five product groups including tea in value added forms and herbal teas; coir products; cut flowers and foliage; software services; electronic products and components; ceramic, porcelain, terra cotta and granite products; rubber and plastic goods; gems and jewellery; and apparel and textiles.

A Sri Lankan food festival and a cultural performance will be part of the celebrations and the chefs and artists for these events will be flown courtesy of SriLankan Airlines.

Investment seminars in Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka with the assistance of JETRO and Sri Lanka Trade and Investment Centre, organised by the Board of Investment, will be another major event. Around 250 are expected to participate at these seminars. With the peace efforts under way, the investment seminar is expected to result in attracting many Japanese investors to Sri Lanka.

A group of Japanese journalists will also be flown into island by SriLankan Airlines and the Ceylon Tourist Board prior to the major events to see Sri Lanka for themselves. The Sri Lanka Tea Board will organise a special tea service of best Sri Lankan tea during the events.

A Sri Lankan film festival will also take place.
