Tea promotion in Thailand
The Sri Lanka Tea Board together with the Sri Lanka Thailand Business Council and the Sri Lanka Embassy in Thailand conducted a special Ceylon Tea Festival in Thailand recently. The promotion was held to broaden the range of Sri Lankan tea available to Thai consumers and to provide a forum for Thai importers and tea quota holders to meet with the leading tea exporters from Sri Lanka, to enable them to establish new contacts. The import of tea in Thailand is governed by a quota regime, which provides for a concessionary rate of duty while imports outside the quota is subjected to much higher duty. the general tea promotion as well as business-to-business negotiations with importers are considered vital for the Sri Lankan tea trade to increase its market share in Thailand, both in quantitative and qualitative terms. This is necessary at a time when tea exporters should be gearing up for a period beyond the quotas in accordance with the World Trade Organisation rules. The festival provided the participants and visitors with a range of teas from different agro-climatic areas in Sri Lanka such as Uva, Dimbula, Nuwara-Eliya Uda Pussellawa, Kandy and Ruhuna. The Director of the Sri Lanka Tea Board and the Sri Lankan tea exporters conducted special tea tasting sessions for the visitors. SriLankan Airlines too contributed towards this promotion by providing two Bangkok/Colombo/Bangkok complimentary air tickets to the winners of a raffle draw. Four Sri Lanka tea companies - HVA Group the marketer of Heladiv Teas and Heladiv ice tea, Standard Trading Company, the marketer of Batik Teas, CTP Pre-Packed Exporters (Pte) Ltd., the marketer of Dheane - Te and Stassen Exporters Ltd., the marketer of Stassens Green Tea took part in the Ceylon Tea Festival. |
