Tea exports grow in 2002 1Q

Sri Lanka's export earnings from tea for the period January-March 2002 have gone up by Rs. 0.94 billion or six per cent compared to the corresponding period of 2001, Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers (Pvt) Ltd. said in its Weekly Tea Market Report.

Earnings from tea bags recorded a 24.1 per cent growth while bulk tea reported a 4.8 per cent growth.

The volume of tea exported also increased by 4.62 million kilos or 6.5 per cent during this period from the same period in the previous year. Bulk tea and tea in bags recorded the biggest growth of 7.7 per cent and 19.5 per cent respectively.

The Commonwealth of Independent States continued to be the main buyer of Ceylon Tea during this period although the quantity imported by the region declined by 3.6 million kilos from the corresponding period of the previous year. Apart from exports to the United Arab Emirates, Syria, Iraq and Tunisia which increased, exports to all the other top 12 destinations declined during this period.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's tea exports in March 2002 increased by 2.8 per cent or 0.7 million kilos from March 2001, the tea report said. A 14.9 per cent growth in quantity was recorded by tea bags which showed the biggest sector-wise increase.

Export earnings in March went up by 2.6 per cent over March 2001 with tea bags again attributing to the highest growth of 21.5 per cent.
