IPM conference on HR management

The National Conference on Human Resource Management 2002, organised by the Institute of Personnel Management (IPM), will be held on May 17 and 18 at the BMICH.

This year's conference under the theme 'A new agenda for human resource management in the changing globalised economy' will focus on the key aspects of human resource (HR) management including strategic redirection, corporate right-sizing, HR management and information technology, mergers and acquisitions and workplace cooperation in the changing economy.

Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe will be the chief guest while Director of the Institute for Financial Management and Research India Prof. S. Ramachander will be the guest of honour and keynote speaker.

There will be six sessions and each session will deal on a specific subject relating to the global trends in human resource management.

During the first session, Chairman MAS Holdings Mahesh Amalean will address the gathering on 'Changing strategic direction - New role of HR management'. Deputy Managing Director Ceylon Tobacco Company Ltd. J.D. Bandaranayake will speak on 'Corporate right-sizing' during session two.

Consultant Post Graduate Institute of Management Lalith Weeratunge will speak on 'Discovering people potential'.

The first session on May 18 will be conducted by General Manager - Human Resources at Suntel Ltd. J. Kumarasinghe, who will speak on 'The challenges of managing HR in the context of the IT era'. Chairman Employees Trust Fund and HR Director Glaxo SmithKline Beecham Dinesh Weerakkody will address the gathering on 'Mergers and acquisitions - HR perspective'.

During the final session, Management Consultant Dr K.L. Chandratilleka will speak on 'Workplace cooperation in the changing economy'. At the end of the sessions, there will be a panel discussion.

The highlight of this year's conference are the HR Service Providers Exhibition and the awarding of the HR gold medal for the first time in IPM's history.

The exhibition will be on at the same venue during the conference. One company from Singapore and two from India are expected to participate at this exhibition together with local firms. It will have 38 stalls and is open to the public.

The service providers at the exhibition include advertising, banking, enterprise resource planning, HR advisory services, HR education, market research, medical services, professional institutions, recruiting, security, training, IT training, outdoor training and universities.

HR management is shifting from a narrow base to a broader perspective due to challenges posed locally as well as globally. There is a need to equip ourselves to face the challenges. The topic for the conference was selected taking global and local challenges into consideration, said IPM President M.N. Jayaratne.

Speaking of future plans, he said they hope to establish regional offices in the districts of Kandy, Matara and Galle, provide HR consultancy services, HR publications and establish a learning centre.

The IPM was established in 1959 and was incorporated by an Act of Parliament. It is a member of the Asia Pacific Federation of Human Resource Management and at present has 350 members. (SG)
