Entrepreneurs to be recognised for the 7th time

The Sri Lankan Entrepreneur of the Year 2001, the event which honours the island's business community, was launched last week in Colombo by the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL).

The annual event, being held for the seventh time this year, will recognise entrepreneurs on a provincial and national level, FCCISL President Macky Hashim said at a media conference held to announce the awards.

The provincial awards ceremonies will be held in October while the national awards ceremony will take place on November 27. July 15 will be the closing date for entries.

Chairman of the Awards Organising Committee Tissa Jayaweera said 279 awards will be presented this year including 33 national awards. The Entrepreneur of the Year will win the Platinum Trophy.

Entrepreneurs who have played a leading role in their organisations during the past three years are eligible to take part in the event while their enterprises should be duly registered businesses which have existed for the past five years. They will be categorised as micro, small, medium, large and extra large for the awards, Jayaweera said.

Union Assurance Ltd. (UAL) will be the grand sponsor of the awards. The company is sponsoring the event for the second consecutive year and will continue as the grand sponsor for two more years.

"Together with FCCISL's 37 constituent member chambers, the 34 branches of UAL will work towards taking this programme island-wide to encourage small scale entrepreneurs in the outstations who may have fears about taking part in events of this nature," he said.
