Huge boost for tea exporting countries

by Reggie Fernando, Our London Corr.

The world's tea producers received a tremendous boost last week when many leading dailies here published a new research report, which states that "drinking tea in large quantities may reduce the risk of dying after a heart attack".

According to the report researchers believe the protection in tea may be coming from flavonoids an antioxidant found naturally in various food including fruits and vegetables such as apples, onions and brocoli.

This is the first time researchers have found that flavonoids protect after a heart attack. This antioxidant the reports states prevents blood clotting which may stop the hardening of arteris.

Dr. Kenneth Mukamal, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School who led the study said: "We found that tea drinkers had lower death rates regardless of age, gender, smoking status, obesity, hypertension or previous heart attacks." The reports published also says that tea drinkers are less likely to suffer from many other health problems and goes on to detail them:

Cancer: Tea comes from the plant camellia sinensis, which is thought to contain powerful antioxidants which combat harmful chemicals in the blood.

Headaches: A cuppa is a good way of soothing headaches, according to experts. A new clinical trial revealed that low levels of caffeine in tea has pain-relieving properties.

Teeth: Tea is one of the few natural dietary sources of fluoride. According to a study from Newcastle University, three standard cups of tea a day could provide children with enough fluoride to prevent tooth decay.

Strokes: The antioxidants which tea contains can cut the risk of suffering from a stroke. Catherine Collins, from the British Dietetic Association, says: "Flavonoids can reduce the chances of having a stroke, as they can prevent the artery walls from narrowing.'

Minerals: Tea contains the mineral manganese, which is important to maintain the healthy functioning of enzymes in the body.

Immune system: Flavonoids also boost the body's immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells.

Alzheimer's: The Alzheimer's Society says there is research which shows there are possible benefits to older people and people with Alzheimer's disease from drinking green tea.

Fertility: A daily cuppa makes it easier to conceive, according to a report in the American Journal of Public Health.
