Miss Tourism - a pageant to remember

Sixty contestants will start arriving in Sri Lanka on September 2, 2002 to take part in one of the most popular beauty pageants in the world tied up with Tourism.

Nathalia Tamara Gamarra Flores, 18 from Paraguay.

The difference in Miss Tourism International and any other beauty pageant is that the contestants are already beauty queens and title holders in their own countries who will vie for the coveted title of Miss Tourism International 2002. The winner will wear the crown through 2002 and up to October 2003 when the next pageant will be held.

Miss Tourism International is a beauty pageant with a difference. The Franchise owner of this pageant, Mr. Charlie See of Hollywood, U.S.A. consented to Sri Lnaka being the host country when Sebastian A.C. Perera the Franchise Director and Chairman of the Organising Committee of Miss Tourism International in Sri Lanka made a strong bid to stage the pageant in Sri Lanka at a time when tourism in the country was actively being promoted.

The staging of this pageant therefore is well timed and it certainly will give tourism a much needed boost. The response from the business sector has also been encouraging. Sri Sangabo Corea who has been involved right from the very beginning with Mr. Sebastian Perera has prepared the ground work for the rest of the committee. He has given the beauty pageant the marketing thrust with the Franchise Director that will enable sponsors to get maximum advertising mileage out of it. All sponsors and those providing support service swill benefit immensely by associating themselves with the pageant.

Nawaz Rajabdeen is finalising arrangements on behalf of Colombo's host hotel. After two day's stay at the host hotel the contestants will start off on their itinerary with their first mini pageant at Club Dolphin in Waikkal. The programme will kick off with the very exciting Miss Swimsuit mini pageant held at Club Dolphin... a sensational start for the contestants. This will be followed by 7 other mini pageants in the run up to the world finals which will be held at the B.M.I.C.H. on October 4, 2002.

The final mini pageant will be held in Colombo's host hotel, which is the Trans Asia Hotel. The contestants will find the ambience of the Trans Asia Hotel ideal for their relaxation and the hotel will doubtless be the centre of attraction with sixty beauty queens staying in it. Many events are being arranged for the contestants during their stay in Colombo's host hotel before they all go into the final rehearsal on the catwalk at the world finals. The Franchise Director and Chairman of the Organising Committee and the Foreign Choregrapher will personally ensure that the world finals live up to the international standards laid down in the agreement. This will certainly be a learning experience for the Sri Lankans who will be appointed to assist in the different spheres that go to make up a glittering spectacle!

The national carrier, SriLankan Airlines has pride of place amongst the sponsors, as the Principal Sponsor of Miss Tourism International by virtue of the fact that the sixty contestants are flown down by the national carrier.

Seven other hotels located in popular tourist destinations will take the contestants from one exciting night halt to another giving the contestants an insight into the scenic beauty and cultural splendour that this beautiful country is blessed with. The golden sands, the blue waters and the cultural splendour that is there in full measure will be included in some of the many features the contestants will be exposed to.

The Organising Committee has looked into this aspect with attention to detail and from the time the contestants step on Sri Lankan soil right up to their departure on October 5, 2002 they would have seen a wide cross section of the country getting a first hand knowledge about the country-side and the famous landmarks that are talked about. All sponsors tied-up with Miss Tourism International have the privilege of having one, two or three (depending on the value of sponsorship) modelling for their products or services without levying a fee. They will be permitted to use the beauty queen's name, voice, signature and picture to advertise the sponsor's products or services. This alone is an invaluable privilege. They can even be photographed for an year-end calendar which can be of international class, with no less a person than a beauty queen being featured. This of course will be done under a strict understanding with the franchise director and the organizing committee.

An open invitation is extended to manufacturers of swimsuits and casualwear to contact Sebastian A.C. Perera Franchise Director & Chairman of the Organising Committee and discuss possibilities of wearing Sri Lankan made swimsuits and casualwear during these parades in order to maintain uniformity.

The Minister of Tourism, Gamini Lokuge and his ministry officials who are supporting Miss Tourism International 2002 wholeheartedly have appealed to the business sector to extend their cooperation and support to make this event an overwhelming success.

The galaxy of beauty queens expected are from all over the world which include from Romania, America, Puerto Rico, Korea, Venezuela, Denmark, Switzerland, Malaysia, Poland, Czech Republic, Tortola British Virgin Islands, Sweden, Iceland, China, Slovak Republic, Estonia, New Zealand, Monaco, Singapore, Nepal, Germany, Croatia, Holland, Curacao, Ghana, Surinam, Israel, France, Japan, Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia, Kyrghyzstan, Belorussia, Turkmenistan, Russia, Modavia, Chile, India, Japan, Cyprus, Hungary, Sweden, United Kingdom, Columbia, Philippines, Thailand, South Africa and a number of other countries.

For further information on the pageant you may contact the Franchise Director on Tel. 576369 and 574322.
