TNA to meet opposition parties

by Ananth Palakidnar

The Tamil National Alliance will shortly begin meetings with Parliamentary Opposition parties and other groups hostile to the current peace process. The Tamil political leadership is anxious to broaden political participation in the South in the on-going peace process.

The TNA leadership, which has recently met the LTTE leadership in the Vanni will, however, first have talks with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe before they begin meetings with the Opposition.

Mr. Joseph Pararajasingam, a senior Parliamentarian of the Tamil National Alliance told the Sunday Observer, the overall support of all political parties was the need of the hour to spearhead the peace process. "We can see there is a huge support from the people irrespective of race, religion, and region for the peace process. But certain political parties and individuals are trying hard to mislead the people and topple the entire peace process. Therefore the TNA, which comprises of all main Tamil parties has planned to meet some of the opposition parties such as Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and Sihala Urumaya which are in the forefront of agitating against the current peace moves between the UNF Government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Mr. Pararajasingam said.

He further said that despite various obstacles, the stage has now been set for the talks to find a lasting solution to the ethnic crisis. If the Opposition gives its cooperation it wont be a problem to reach at a settlement as early as possible.

Meanwhile the TNA is meeting Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on May 20 to discuss the problems faced by the fishermen in the North and the East, the issue of the Tamil detainees and also the matters with regard to the current peace process. The Attorney General will also attend this meeting along with the Prime Minister, sources said.
