Foreign investment prospects up: Big business eyes North-East

By Frances Bulathsinghala

A blue print for business development in the North East is being developed with emphasis on procuring foreign investment in the region. Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Chandra Jayarathne said yesterday that the Government would be kept informed of the efforts taken by the Chamber in this regard. He said that fisheries, aquatic and marine development were the main areas highlighted for business growth in Jaffna and the East coast region.

He added that the formal functioning of traffic through the A9 route to Jaffna and other North East regions would create a base for the development and expansion of ventures designed to boost local tourism.

Meanwhile the Chamber of Construction and Industries (CCI) will earmark locations for the constructing of commercial establishments when the Chamber officials visit Jaffna on 14 May for a survey in this regard. The CCC Chairman said that a detailed plan for re-construction of towns totally destroyed due to war such as Thenmarachchi and Chavakachcheri will also be drawn up.

He said that the representatives of the CCI would meet government representatives to get their views on towns and commercial establishments in the region that they feel should get priority construction attention.
