Three
gangsters of robber gang rounded up
Three gansters out of a most wanted 13-man deadly robber gang that was responsible for a number of armed robberies over a period of time running to several million rupees, was rounded up in Akuressa by a team from Dehiwala police last Thursday night. They were produced in the Mount Lavinia courts and remanded till May 21. Another four who were arrested earlier are already in remand. The gang leader was killed in Ankumbura during a shoot out with the Ankumbura police a few days ago. While one more gangster who has become an invalid, that too after a police firing, four continue to remain in hiding. According to Dehiwala OIC Crimes, Inspector Ranaweera, the other articles robbed ranged from vehicles to cattle. Some of the areas these robberies staged were Mount Lavinia, Tanamalwila, Ambalangoda and Lunugamwehera. The robbery in Ambalangoda was of a jewellery shop and the loot was valued at Rs. 8.8 million, according to police. In Lunugamwehera, it was a cattle farm which had nearly 600 animals. The robbers first tied up the owner of the farm. Thereafter they busied themselves loading the cattle as much as possible to a lorry in which they came along. However, the owner somehow had managed to free himself. He then fired at the gang while they were escaping. According to Ranaweera one gangster was injured and is now paralysed. Further investigations are conducted by Mount Lavinia ASP Nalaka de Silva under the directions of Senior Superintendent W.P Dayaratne. |
