Art Exhibition

Inspired work of four different talented artists will be on display at the Russian Centre in Colombo art exhibition of a different nature.

The artists are Helen Wilson Prokofieff Sversky - Russian artist, Olga Afonina - Russian artist well-known in Sri Lanka for her painting and sculpture combination, Alain Delpech - French engraver and Frederic Luz - who is a French artist and a writer. The exhibition will be held from May 15 to 24.

The cultures of Russia and France intermingle and thus the exhibition is named "Pure art, colours of alphabets."

Helen's works depict her interest in mathematical logic and poetry. She is inspired by the colours and the music of occidental France. Olga has held a number of exhibitions in Sri Lanka with her remarkable artistic works created of tea and other natural solids. Even though Alain and Frederic will not be present at this exhibition, their works would witness their talents on engravings and heraldic bearings. Entrance is free.

Eighty Fifth Birthday remembrance

The 85th Birthday remembrance of former Speaker the Late Deshamanya Alhaj Bakeer Markar will be held today at 10.00 a.m. at the Headquarters Auditorium of the Youth Fronts, Main Street, Colombo 11.

A special lecture on 'The Challenges faced by the Muslim World Today' will be delivered by J. R. P. Suriyapperuma, the well-known political Analyst and former General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. The session will be chaired by Youth Fronts President Alhaj N. M. Ameen.

'Supremacy of Parliament,' a book containing Parliament speeches of Marhoom Bakeer Markar, edited by Hon. Alhaj A. H. M. Azwer will be released, on the same day.

Lalith de Silva of the United Lanka Forum of Saudi Arabia will inaugurate the granting of 100 Scholarships to refugee Students to pursue higher studies.

Mass Communication Minister Alhaj Imthiyaz Bakeer Markar, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Alhaj A. H. M. Azwer and distinguished representatives from Muslim countries and other invitees will participate.

Book launch

Prof. Siri Gunasinghe, poet and a novelist of fame domiciled in Canada for the past three decades, is in Sri Lanka on a brief visit. He recently launched his latest novel "Miringuwa Elleema" (Chasing the Mirage) published by S. Godage and Company. The launching of the book was held at the Auditorium of the Colombo Library Services Board presided over by Prof. J. B. Dissanayake.

Prof. Gunasinghe,who wrote "Hevanella" and "Mandarama", the two novels was hailed as the pioneer of the 'free-style poem writing' and his "Mas le Nethi Eta" (Bare Bones) was acclaimed as a landmark ration in the Sinhala poetic history.

Prof. Gunasinghe who will be 77 this year spent most of his academic career in teaching at the University in Canada since he left Sri Lanka in 1970. Although he went there just for a year on request he decided to extend his stay for another year. But as permission was not granted by the relevant authorities he decided to stay there when he found another professor was granted permission while his request was turned down.

He and the late Prof. Ediriweera Sarachchandra contributed much to the development of Sinhala literature and were known as the pioneers of the Peradeniya 'Gurukula'. Today he writes novels in spoken Sinhala claiming that it is the language of the ordinary masses.

Art Auction: We care for youth

"We Care for the Youth" will be the theme of the art auction organised to raise funds through ART, to nurture care and educate over 400 impaired children at the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind, Ratmalana.

An Art Auction is being held by contributions received from well-known artists. The artists include George Keyt, Manjusiri, Senaka Senanayake, George Claessen, Iromi Wijewardena, Laki Senanayake, Saski Pringiers and Sita de Saram. The paintings will be auctioned during a formal Charity Dinner on May 18 at Taj Samudra Hotel organised by the Resource Development Committee of the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind - Ratmalana.

The paintings are now on view at the Hermitage Gallery, 28, Gower Street, Colombo 5.

Scholarships awarded to needy

Amata Free Medical Centre at Gangarama Viharaya, Kohalwila, Kelaniya sponsored by Amata Free Medical and Diabetic Centre, Mahindarama Buddhist Temple, Jalan Kampur 10640 Penang, Malaysia on the directive of the Most Ven. Dr. Kirinde Dhammananda Nayaka Thera, the High Priest of Malaysia, had awarded 40 scholarships to students attending the Gangarama Viharaya, Kohalwila, Shailasekirama Viharaya, Horawala, Purana Viharaya, Elgiriya, Wellawaya Siri Piyarathana Pirivena and Pothuhera.

Each student will receive an annual grant of Rs. 4000.

A Chinese Buddhist delegation headed by Ven. Elgiriye Indaratana Thera, the incumbent of Mahindaramaya, Penang, Malaysia was in the country to hand over expensive medicine to Ven. Horawala Dharmarama Thera, Director of Amata Free Medical Centre and the Amata Educational Scholarships Foundation, Kelaniya.
