CH in rousing 49/0 win over Kandy Youths

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corr

CH and FC scored a 49 points (4 goals, 3 tries) to nil win over Kandy Youths Sports Club in a Caltex League 'A' Division rugby tournament match played at Nittawila yesterday. At half-time CH and FC led 26-0.

The Kandy Youths team though beaten were never disgraced as they decided to play in this tournament only last week due to financial constraints.

They just had six practice sessions before the match and their fitness showed, adding their woes was that they did not have adequate replacements. The two props Indika Jayaratne and Chamara Gunaratne looked tired and could not 'lift' the line out jumpers which denied them of any possession in the line outs. When one of the props walked off, one of the flankers, Prassanna Weerasinghe had to bind in the front row.

With all these draw backs, they put up a gutty performance and did not allow the fatter and heavier CH forwards to dictate terms and their opponents scored mostly through snap opportunities. Kandy Youths won the hearts by the crowds through their gutty performances though CH won by a comfortable margin.

CH opened scoring in the 10th minute when prop Cooray scored. Full back Nalin Dissanayake failed to add the extra points.

Ten minutes later CH scored again through prop Naren Perera who took a short tap a few metres away from the line and touched down by right post. Nalin Dissanayake added the extra points. CH led 12-0.

CH scored their 3rd try in the 32nd minute with flanker Seneviratne collecting a low pass and brushed past two defenders to score near the posts. Nalin Dissanayake added the extra points on. CH 19-0.

Kandy Youths came back storming into game and kept play deep inside CH territory and almost scored but this was disallowed by the referee.

Just before the short blast scrum half Roy Nishantha scored a snap try by the posts and Nalin Dissanayake added the extra points for CH to lead 26-0.

Almost immediately after resumption, CH scored through flanker Bertie Jayasekera by right post almost with tackle. Nalin Dissanayake missed an easy conversion. CH 31-0.

But CH had to wait for nearly 30 minutes for their next scoring as Kandy Youths put up a stout-hearted defence and kept the CH forwards at bay.

It was in the 36th minute of the second half that fullback Nalin Dissanayake formed the over lap to score near the right post and added the extra points himself.

Then during the injury time, the CH scored an unconverted try through centre Lasantha Ediriweera.
