Six
new clubs from Central Province in outstation tourney
by S.M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Corr. Six new rugby clubs from the Central Province will participate in this year's rugby tournament for Outstation Clubs organised by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union and sponsored by Caltex which will get underway shortly. These six new clubs are Katugastota Rugby Football Club, Polgolla Rugby Football Club, Mawilmada Rugby Football Club, Matale Rugby Football Club, Nuwra Eliya Rugby Football Club and Pilimatalawa Rugby Football Club. At least five of these clubs took to rugby after following coaching clinics conducted by the Central Province Rugby Football Union headed by its President Maurice Perera, Secretary Iswan Omar and the rugby coaches Sangaran Liynage, Y.M.S. Ratnayake, Kalu Perera, Saman Edema. Katugastota, Polgolla and Mawilmada Rugby Football Clubs are located around Nitttawela - the hub of rugby activity in the Central Province and they will receive the necessary exposure to the game in which the rules are complex. It must be said to the credit of CPRFU that so many clubs have taken to rugby in the Central Province which was earlier confined to a few clubs which played this game traditionally. The other clubs which are listed to play in the tournament for Outstation Clubs are the big brothers - Dimbulla, Dickoya, Uva and Kelani Valley and others who took to this game in the recent past like Peradeniya University, Sri Lanka Military Academy (Diyatalawa), Balangoda RFG, University of Sabaragamuwa, Kegalle RFC, Ratnapura RFC, Eheliyagoda RFC, Embilipitiya RFC, University of Sri Jayawardenapura, Jawatta Lions SC, Pelwatta SC, Old Dhuthians SC, Sri Lanka Air Force, Diyatalawa. The President of the CPRFU told the 'Sunday Observer' that next year five more clubs from the Central Province will be taking part in competitive rugby. The Central Province Women's Rugby Team and Anuradhaprua Women's Rugby Team participated in a women's rugby tournament in Thailand earlier this month and performed well. |
