LG Elections as scheduled by Don Asoka Wijewardena Local Government Elections for 17 local bodies will be held on May 20 as it is scheduled. Deputy Commissioner (Elections), M.C. Arunthavachelvam, told the 'Sunday Observer' that about one million registered voters would cast their vote to elect members for Municipal councils of Colombo, Galle and Ratnapura Urban councils of Katunayaka-Seeduwa, Peliyagoda, Panadura and Tangalle, Pradesiya Sabhas of Kesbewa, Kalutara, Nattandiya, Mihintale, Tirappane, Hali-Ela, Moneragala, Buttala, Ratnapura and Abyagena. Arrangements have already been made to avert any possible irregularities and returning officers have been instructed to take action against those who flout the Election Law. According to the Election Commissioner's department, 825 polling stations will be made available for voters from 7.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. on May 20 under Local Authorities Election Ordinance and counting of votes is expected to begin on the same day at 9.00 p.m. at 114 counting stations. DIG (Elections), Gamini Nawaratne, said that around 8,000 police officers including patrol units would be deployed to monitor any violations of the Election Law by some unruly elements. He said that the Police would not hesitate to take stringent action against violators of the Election Law and those who misbehave in contravention of police orders. "Minor incidents of threatening voters had taken place in Ratnapura, Tangalle, Panadura and Nattandiya areas and we had to deploy additional police personnel to those areas to curb possible outbreak of violence," said the DIG. |
