Colombo Mayor, Deputy Mayor appointed

The United National Party appointed its Colombo Municipal Council Mayor candidate Prasanna Gunawardane as Mayor and Asath Sali as Deputy Mayor. Mr. Gunawardane polled the highest preferential votes of 24,512 and Mr. Sali polled the third highest of 13,260. Mr. Titus Perera, former Deputy Mayor polled the second highest of 14,713. He was appointed chief whip of the ruling UNP and in a move to give a chance to the minority community Mr. Sali was appointed Deputy Mayor, UNP sources said.

These decisions were made at a UNP heirachy meeting held at Sri Kotha on Friday. It is also reported that at this meeting Ministers M.H. Mohamed and M.A.M. Maharoof had differences of opinion over the appointments. However, the party decided on the appointments after lengthy deliberations. Earlier on Friday, former UNP strongman Sirisena Cooray met with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and it is reported that he too urged the Prime Minister to appoint Asath Sali as Deputy Mayor.

Members of the Colombo Municipality will take their oaths on June 11 and the first meeting of the newly elected council will be held on June 15.
