Cabinet
sub-committee to probe import of 44 vehicles
A four Member Cabinet Sub Committee will probe the import of 44 vehicles incurring Rs. 1.13 billion during the People's Alliance administration. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed the Cabinet Sub Committee comprising Finance Minister K.N. Choksy, Interior Minister John Amaratunga, Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe and Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake. The Committee is expected to submit its report in two weeks. Mr. Karunanayake wanted to know from President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga where the vehicles were and alleged that although the said 44 vehicles were imported by the PA government for distribution among the Ministers, he has not received an official vehicle so far but was using his own personal vehicle. He told the Cabinet that there was no need to allocate money to purchase vehicles for the Ministers as those vehicles could be issued to the Ministers. Minister Karunanayake further on alleged that the import of the vehicles was done without calling tenders and without voted funds. The Bank of Ceylon has granted a loan to the government to import these 44 vehicles including 26 bullet proof vehicles. Mr. Karunanayake said that when he raised the matter at the recent Cabinet meeting startling revelations were made by Finance Minister K.N. Choksy. According to Finance Minister BoC has granted a loan of Rs.275 million for the purchasing of super luxury cars. President Kumaratunga in response has said that some of these vehicles were used in the President's office and had added that she was personally unaware of the remainder. |
