Modern scientific methods to protect our coral reefs

Colombo, May 23 (Lankapuvath) - Sri Lanka's natural coral reef in the Southern coastal belt will be protected using modern scientific methods. The Ministry of Environment will engage a team of experts to conduct experiments to preserve the natural environment for the benefit of future generations, Minister Rukman Senanayake said. He added that the coral reef in Hikkaduwa and other areas of the Southern coastal belt had been affected due to unlawful activity and unauthorised constructions.

The ministry will take stern action against those who are responsible for causing damages to the natural environment.

Minister Rukman Senanayake said that the Ministry of Environment will explore the possibility of obtaining assistance from foreign experts to draw up a long-term programme to protect our coral reefs.

Meanwhile, wildlife experts are carrying out experiments to replant coral in the Hikkaduwa seas.
