Investigative journalist will speak at Foundation dinner

The Rainbow Foundation will hold its annual charity dinner on May 31 at the Hilton Colombo. The Foundation which has, as one of its objectives the empowerment of disadvantage citizens and development of human resources to participate in Sri Lanka's progress has invited one of India's foremost investigate journalist to speak at the dinner.

Mr. Gurumurthy, a Chartered Accountant by profession and advisor to the Goenka Group, and now better known for its investigative journalism, is a well known personality admired for his work in this field. He has taken on, in the public interest, corporate giants and even the Indian government, exposing corruption and power peddling.

His exposures on the Power Purchase Agreement between the Maharashtra State Electricity Board and the Enron Corporation brought the Dabhol project to a halt.

Gurumurthy's arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation caused ripples in the government when he was accused of treason under the Official Secrets Act for his alleged role in advising the President of India to challenge the Prime Minister of India in state matters. The Statesman Newspaper (March 24, 1987) in an editorial stated, "... But what our Washington correspondent's report makes abundantly clear is that the CBI is going to extraordinary lengths to build up what looks suspiciously like a false case ...... the murky details that have so far come to light suggest that far from being guilty of "Criminal Conspiracy" Mr. S. Gurumurthy .... is the victim of just that and that the conspirators may well include some of the highest officers of State in this country .... Now .... the CBI owes an unconditional apology to .... Mr. S. Gurumurthy and a full explanation to the Public".

The Foundation has previously invited well known personalities including Rev. Gordon Moyes of Australia, Mrs. Kiran Bedi of the Indian Police, Mr. Keerthi Premadasa and Gopalkrishna Gandhi as speakers.

The Trustees of the Foundation are Mr. Mahesh Amalean, Mr. Tissa K. Bandaranayake, Mr. Ratna Sivaratnam, Justice J. F. A. Soza, Mr. K. R. Ravindran, Mr. Rienzie Wijeyatilleke and Mr. Kumar Nadesan.
