NERD
wins two silver medals from Geneva
by W. Wilfred Silva, Ja-Ela Group Correspondent Two silver medals were awarded to the National Engineering Research and Development Centre of Sri Lanka at the International New Inventions Competition held in Geneva, Switzerland, for its two new inventions - WOOD GAS STOVE and the hand operated COCONUT OIL EXTRACTING MACHINE. The cooker is operated by burning a gas mixture, which is produced by partially burning wood chips. This is an invention of Mechanical Engineer D. M. Punchi Banda of the Centre for Energy Environment Management of the NERD. According to Banda the cooker is hazard free and could be used in any place. A packet of 500g wood chips is sufficient for one hour operation and you could prepare one meal. The Wood Gas stove is a very good alternative for LPG operated cooker. The hand operated coconut oil extracting machine was invented by Ms. Malani K. Ranatunge, a Chemical Engineer at the Agricultural & Post Harvesting Department of the Centre. The machine is a hand operated small made one. Scraped dry coconut is filled into the mould of the machine and compressed by using the screwed handle of the machine. After the oil is extracted the coconut inside the machine will become a shape of compressed cake and the cake which comes out of the machine, could be re-used to get coconut milk, by mixing with warm water and pressing. This coconut milk is a less-fat coconut milk. According to the two Engineers D. M. Punchibanda and Ms Malani K. Ranatunge there were more than 100 inventions presented at this exhibition. The exhibition was evaluated by a committee of international experts from various countries. According to the inventors the committee has given high marks to those who have presented a practical solution to an existing problem of their own country by their inventions. |
