Seven
soloists at SOSL competition
The finals of the Concerto competition organised by the Symphony Orchestra will be contested by seven young soloists, on Tuesday, May 28. The competition is held every two years, to encourage and discover new talent. The three instrumentalists will perform Beethoven's 1st Piano Concerto, Wieniawski's 2nd Violin Concerto and Saint Saens 1st Cello Concerto respectively. Four young singers will perform a variety of music ranging from arias by Handel, Mozart, Verdi and Puccini to songs by Gershwin and Lloyd Webber. The winner of each of the strings, piano and vocal categories will receive a cash prize and will be invited to perform with the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka at the Young Soloists Concert on July 27. The three independent judges are the international violinist Daniel Bhattacharya, the composer Rohan de Livera who was a judge in the preliminary round, and Rohan de Silva, Sri Lanka's famous pianist and accompanist who is also a member of the faculty of the Juilliard School of New York. The competitions began in 1994. Past winners include the pianist and choral conductor Soundarie David and the cellist Tamara Holsinger. The principal sponsor of the competition is Lanka Orix Leasing Company. It will be held at Ladies' College Hall, commencing at 5 p.m. and admission is open to the public. |
