Practical
English education project to be launched
by Vimukthi Fernando The business community in Sri Lanka has come forward in bridging a void that lasted for years in the human resource sector. The National English Foundation (NEF) with the primary objective of practical English education for those who are over 2 years of age, would be launched on May 30, 2002 at the Central Bank. The project which has the backing of the government as well as the opposition will be implemented initially in 20 schools in Kotte, and would be extended islandwide. According to present statistics there are 329,121 three year olds in Sri Lanka who are eligible to participate in this project. English is imperative in an era where trade and commerce is paramount. Lack of English knowledge has been an impediment to our growth in the global village. We have already lost generations for the lack of English knowledge. If we had emphasised on this we would have long surpassed the development in Singapore. It is vital in future growth and it is our social responsibility to prepare the future generation with necessary knowledge, said Ravi Karunanayake, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs introducing the project. The project has been supported by the British Council, the UN, Red Cross and other Educational Institutions. The trustess of NEF are Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Bandula Gunawardena, Mr. Azhar Razeen, Prof. Rajeeva Wijesinghe, Dr. P. Saravanamuttu, Prof. Furukhan and Mr. Richard De Zoysa. |
